KEY POINTS:
The New York City sanitation department and a Times Square business group are offering people a novel way to bid farewell to 2007.
For one hour on December 28, shredders will be set up in the Times Square Visitor's Centre so people can destroy the year's lingering bad memories.
Everything from photos of ex-lovers to lousy report cards can be shredded and recycling bins will be provided for more robust items such as annoying CDs and regrettable fashion mistakes, AP reports.
Passers-by will also be provided with notepads so they can write down any memories they wish would go away, the organisers said.
A prize of US$250 ($335) will be awarded to the person who ditches their baggage in the most creative way.
