KEY POINTS:
Celebrities and fashion designers have gathered in New York for the annual Council of Fashion Designers of America awards.
Held at the New York Public Library, the awards aim to recognise the most outstanding contributions made to the American fashion industry by designers and members of the press.
Belgian designer Dries van Noten is being honoured as International Designer of the Year and Candy Pratts Price, executive fashion director of style.com, will receive the Eugenia Sheppard Award, which recognises outstanding contributions to American fashion journalism.
Awards for womenswear, menswear and accessory designer of the year will also be awarded, with big names such as Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford and Michael Kors in the running.
Emerging talents in the industry are also recognised at the illustrious event, with sponsor Swarovski underwriting the awards for best newcomers in the categories of womenswear, menswear and accessory design.
The Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Carolina Herrera and the Board of Directors' Special Tribute will be presented to New York mayor Michael R. Bloomberg.
