Fashion designer Denise L'Estrange-Corbet and her daughter Pebbles answer your agonising questions
Q. Relatives have asked me to be a godparent to their firstborn, and I cannot think of anything worse. I am paranoid that if anything happens to them, I will be the lumbered with the child, but do not want to offend them.
Denise says: It's so nice to hear we still have caring people out there in our community. Do you think 'I don't want to look after your kid if you die' is insensitive? Look, 100 per cent for honesty, and you just have to tell them you are very honoured they have considered you, but with work and travel etc. you will never be fully able to participate in the child's life, and therefore they should ask someone more stable. And remember, Children are not just for Christmas, but for life.
Pebbles says: What do godparents actually do? Tell them that if it's so important to label you as one, then you will take it but only on the understanding that if something happens to them, you cant take responsibility for the child because ... well make something up. Even if you decline I'm sure they wont be offended.
