Spunky All Black Dan Carter glides along the modelling catwalk as easily as he glides through opposition backlines on the rugby field.
He talks to Zoe Walker about his apparel preferences.
KEY POINTS:
So what does All Black Dan Carter wear when he isn't on the rugby field?
Well, Jockeys, for one thing. Carter is an ambassador for the underwear brand, which has just launched a new environmentally friendly range, Jockey Modal.
The range, which Carter helped launch last week with a beech tree planting ceremony in Christchurch, is made from a natural and renewable fibre from the tree. Carter says he's pleased Jockey is addressing environmental issues, and counts recycling rubbish and turning off unused lights as his best tips for being eco-smart. "Doing these little things doesn't take much effort but if everyone did them it would make a big difference."
Carter prefers a low-maintenance approach to fashion, preferring to dress down rather than up. His fashion knowledge isn't just limited to jeans and underpants, however, he is also co-owner and director of two GAS stores in Christchurch and Wellington. All Black star, underwear model and businessman: Carter is definitely a man of many talents.
You feel best wearing?
I enjoy dressing down rather than dressing up. Ordinary jeans and a T-shirt suit me fine and make me feel really comfortable.
Whose wardrobe would you most like to raid?
It would have to be Pharrell Williams. I really like his sense of style.
What was the last item of clothing you bought?
I bought a great shirt from Working Style recently, I love it!
Who does the best shoes?
Most definitely Adidas. They have a great range of shoes _ from top sport shoes to great casuals. I basically live in them.
The best jeans?
GAS jeans is a great denim line. There's a huge variety of styles and the quality of the product is awesome.
Is there anything you'd never wear?
Jockey is a great company to work with, but I'd never wear Jockey Women.
Any style icons?
Pharrell Williams again, also David Beckham and guys like that. People who like to define their own style and wear things the way they want to.
Most cherished item?
My Louis Vuitton jacket. I bought it a long time ago but I like it just as much now as when I purchased it.
When I was at high school
I wore?
My school uniform and my favourite Doc Martens, of course.
Silliest trend you ever heard of?
Crocs and jeans! Well, Crocs and anything really.
Most stylish city?
Without a doubt, Milan.
Best city for fashion shopping in the world?
That would easily be Milan as well. I love that city!
What's your biggest indulgence?
I'm always busy and on the go with one thing or the other, so the opportunity to sleep in is always appreciated and one of my biggest indulgences!
Your best style advice for guys who aren't necessarily into fashion?
You need to wear what you feel comfortable in. Guys should dress in what makes them feel good rather than what people say they should be wearing.
Who is the best dressed All Black?
Now that Doug Howlett has gone it's too hard to answer that one.
Do you have a beauty regime?
Not as such. I do love being outside a lot so I use a lot of sunscreen to protect my skin from sun damage.
Who are your favourite designers/brands?
Obviously, I love the work of Adidas, Jockey and GAS but I also really admire the way New Zealand's designers and our home-grown fashion scene has grown over the last few years.
