Cute shark beanies for babies

Think your little one would suit a knitted Nemo on their head? To raise funds for Plunket babies, sea life aquarium Kelly Tarlton's has teamed up with knitting enthusiasts to sell snug, sea-creature-inspired beanies and booties.

The local knitting group, which is part of the Kiwi Family Trust charity, have stitched an eclectic mix of woolly wonders to look like colourful fish and cheeky sharks.

A member of the Kiwi Family Trust, Barbara Aitken, says the knitters enjoyed making the aquatic accessories for a good cause.

"The knitters had fun creating the fish beanies and booties, it's great to know our work will go towards helping young families in need - which is something we really value at the Trust."

An Auckland Plunket group has visited Kelly Tarlton's for a fun Plunket session at the aquarium, where they met the knitters and received some of their creations.

Plunket community development manager and regional volunteer, Clare Green, says this initiative is so sweet it may become a tradition.

"At Plunket we really appreciate help from parties like Kiwi Family Trust and Kelly Tarlton's, the mums and babies loved the sea-animal knitwear - we're sure it will be passed on for generations to come."

The collection coincides with the school holidays, where Kelly Tarlton's is celebrating the season of all baby sea-animals.

Kelly Tarlton's marketing manager, Claire Wheeler, says the fundraiser is a perfect fit.

"There are a lot of animals preparing for breeding, the Gentoo penguins are laying eggs as we speak," she says. "It was only fitting we celebrate life above the ocean and partner with Plunket to celebrate all babies, human and non-human."

The range fits little ones aged six-months to a year.

Families can acquire their own special sea-life beanie by bidding on the items currently being auctioned on Trade Me.
