Hidden in the blaze of light that surrounded the naming at the Apra Silver Scroll Awards of Wayne Mason's Nature as New Zealand's most popular song was a double for composer Gillian Whitehead.
She won the SOUNZ Contemporary Award for the second time for her work the improbable ordered dance for orchestra, premiered by the Auckland Philharmonia in May this year.
She also won the award, one of the few annual awards given to NZ composers, in 1999 for her opera Outrageous Fortune.
The other two finalists, selected by a jury of peers, were Sinew/Synapse, for solo cello by Wellington composer Philip Brownlee and Piano Trio by Dunedin composer Anthony Ritchie.
The SOUNZ Contemporary Award aims to highlight NZ composers in the same way that the Montana Book Awards and the BNZ Visa Gold Arts awards do for other artistic disciplines.
