By EIRLYS HUNTER
When Finn got home from school the next day there were no lights on in the house, and it was freezing.
"Dad? Da-ad!"
Silence. At least there was some food today. Bill hadn't got anything from the list yesterday, but there was cereal and bread and most of the basics. Finn made himself a peanut butter sandwich.
No lights, no fire, no father. He looked for a note. Nothing. Typical. Jen always left a note. Finn knew Jen was not coming back from her conference until tomorrow, and Joe was probably at Edith's house, but where could Bill be? He never went anywhere these days; he just sat at the computer.
Finn felt a surge of guilt. What if he'd really upset Dad by shouting that stuff at him yesterday? The house was so cold and silent that Finn knew his father couldn't be there, but he checked anyway. No one in the laundry or the shed, the bathroom or the bedroom, but Finn noticed the car was still in the garage, so Bill hadn't gone far.
