Stella McCartney has been hired to design Great Britain's outfits for the 2012 Olympics. What a great idea! Suddenly I have a reason to be interested in sports.
McCartney will have her hand in every aspect of design, which is part of her ongoing collaboration with Adidas who have provided sportswear to the team since 1984.
Her collections for Adidas are actually very good - if I were to workout, I'd want to wear them - and she clearly has a passion for sportswear, having featured Olympians as models in a show in 2009 and dressing Caroline Wozniacki for the last Wimbledon tournament.
She's also quintessentially British, which surely helps - Dad is Paul McCartney.
This news has led me to ask, who should design New Zealand's national kit?
The first brand that comes to mind is Huffer, who already marry the idea of fashion with function. They also have an exciting new designer in the form of Aimee McFarlane, who was previously at Lonely Hearts (I can't wait to see what she does with the brand when they show at NZ Fashion Week in September).
Other designers could step up to the starting block too.
Tailored suits for the opening ceremony from Kate Sylvester? Quirky swimwear from Karen Walker? Equestrian outfits from Alexandra Owen? Bodysuits for gymnasts by Lonely Hearts? Curling outfits by Zambesi?
There's no shame in our sportspeople looking good on the world stage, so we should be inspired by Great Britain's decision and look to celebrate our design talent alongside sporting talent.
Who would you like to see designing uniforms for the NZ Olympic team?
