Christmas 2018's top five gift predictions: E-scooters, Lego, AirPods

If you are wondering what might be under your tree this year, chances are it'll either be a personal gaming console, wireless earbuds, or a magical Lego set.

Based on historical data, price comparison website PriceSpy have released their predictions, revealing the most popular products and toys for Christmas 2018.

It appears the Lime scooter trend has well and truly infiltrated the nation this year, with E-scooters ranking at number two on the top five toys list, and a Lego Harry Potter Great Hall set coming in at number one.

As for the top products, the Nintendo Switch personal gaming console is number one, and Apple Wireless headphones came in a close second.

Kiwis also appear to be leaving it to the last minute to snap up their holiday gifts.

According to data from PriceSpy, the most popular online shopping days ahead of Christmas are the Monday before the big day and Christmas Eve - yep, plenty of us Kiwis like to cut it fine.

While this can often lead to stress as we hope presents will arrive on time, Liisa Matinvesi-Bassett, New Zealand country manager for PriceSpy, claims it can also have some benefits: "Although last minute shopping can be rather frantic and stressful, for those willing to wait, this tactic can sometimes pay off for the consumer.

"For example, our data shows the closer you get towards Christmas, the more money consumers can potentially save on product purchases. However, people need to be aware of when those cheaper times are and appreciate late orders may not arrive in time."

According to Matinvesi-Basset, the cheapest days to shop online are December 14 and 15, with pricing increasing after this point and peaking on December 18 and 19.

"Interestingly, after December 19 the price of many products dropped significantly, helping create last-minute sales opportunities for retailers. The cheapest overall day, however, was Christmas Eve."
