The music industry may take civil action against a man suspected of copying more than 50 New Zealand music CDs on to his laptop at Wellington Public Library.
Recording Industry Association chief executive Terence O'Neill-Joyce said the association would act on behalf of its members to crack down on breach of copyright.
Police have decided not to prosecute the man, who was stopped in the central library foyer two weeks ago after library staff saw him with the laptop and a stack of up to 70 compact discs.
Acting Inspector Paul Berry said: "He's copied some CDs for his own use, not to sell or distribute, which puts it on a lower level, though it is still an offence."
