French media reports say first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy has given birth to a baby girl, the first infant born to a sitting president in modern-day France.
President Nicolas Sarkozy was returning from a meeting in Frankfurt on the euro debt crisis when the child was born around 8pm last night (7am today NZST), according to a BFM report.
Europe 1 radio said the 43-year-old mother was doing well after the birth at the small, private Muette Clinic in western Paris.
Large crowds of reporters and onlookers have gathered behind a security cordon outside the clinic, however the presidential palace did not immediately confirm the birth reports.
Bruni-Sarkozy has a 10-year-old son from a previous relationship and Sarkozy has three, aged between 14 and 26.
