Calling all romantic zoo lovers - here's your chance to pop the question

Romantic zoo lovers are being offered the chance to pop the question as part of a late-night romance session.

A bespoke marriage proposal is being auctioned on Trade Me as part of an adults-only Valentine's Day event at Wellington Zoo.

Wellington Zoo community engagement manager Amy Hughes said Valentine's Day allows the zoo to be more "risque", with talks on the romantic exploits of popular animals.

"It's a chance for the grown-ups to enjoy a picnic and a glass of wine, and learn more about what goes on when the lights go off in the animal kingdom."

The zoo will stay open from 5pm through to 8.30pm.

"While the event is mostly about fun, it also gives us the opportunity to share stories about the conservation breeding programmes at the zoo, especially for endangered species."

A limited number of close encounters will also be available for those who want to treat their loved one to a wild night out.

"Our close encounters give people the opportunity to get even closer to our amazing animals, while supporting our conservation fund to save animals in the wild."

The auction for the made-to-order proposal closes on January 27.
