"You stay here," Emeline said. "I won't be long."
Victoria shook her head. "No. I'm coming with you."
The last part of the descent to the beach was easier, although the drizzle had now settled around the hills, closing the bay with a ring of rain. The wind had dropped slightly, the air cheek-biting cold.
By the time the girls reached the sandy shore, both were wet through. Unlacing her boots, Emeline pulled them off and thrust them into Victoria's arms. At least now they wouldn't get totally ruined. "Go to the cave and stay there." This time her sister obeyed without question.
Emeline sprinted off along the beach, bare feet pushing down into the damp sand, trickles of moisture flying from her face, surrounded by the smell and sound of the roaring sea.
"I'm coming," she called to the seal. "I'm coming."
The rocks were slippery and dangerous. Emeline moved carefully. Already two of her toes were bleeding, but she didn't notice. Her eyes were fixed only on the seal. The ocean surged, sending a wave of froth and foam swirling up and around her ankles. Soon the rocks would be submerged. She increased her speed.
