The menu was so creative it made it hard to choose. I contemplated mince on toast with a poached egg ($17), however, this is a dish that I tend to be fussy about, so I went with the vegetarian option of spicy red lentils with yoghurt, coriander and flat bread
- opting for a poached egg ($16). My dining companion picked the potato, feta and dill cake with all the trimmings - poached eggs, portobello mushrooms and bacon ($23.50).
The look was clean and modern, making the most of the outdoor space the cafe occupies in the popular Britomart precinct. We sought sun, so picked a table by the window but later moved outdoors for some fresh air, which unfortunately meant missing out on warm rays.
The food was good but I've been on better brunch dates. The lentils were just the right level of spicy for the morning but far too generous for my one crispy slice of fairly flavourless flat bread. On the plus side, both of our eggs were poached to perfection.
Quay Street Cafe boasts "superb coffee" on its website - and it didn't disappoint. My trim latte was so good I got a second to take away.
