The cafe is just about as pretty as the little cakes, slices and biscuits that Bluebells has become famous for since opening its first sweet cakery in Hillsborough three years ago. This sister store is roomier and offers a wider variety of sweet and savoury treats. The space, in an industrial strip off Newton Rd in the inner city, has been beautifully made over with pastel paints, pot plants and flowers, and vintage tables and chairs. There is seating at a large communable table, on barstools at the window and a couple of smaller tables.
The food is overwhelming to begin with. There is a dizzying array of beautifully crafted mini cakes, cupcakes, slices and fudge. And that's before you notice the sandwiches and rolls in the neighbouring cabinet.
We ordered a chocolate and raspberry mini cake - a rich chocolate cake topped with a thick layer of luscious raspberry cream frosting, pistachios and edible flowers; a melting moment filled with strawberry cream; a warm bacon, cheese and herb scone; and a red velvet cupcake. We devoured everything and wished we had room for more!
