The menu was a short, affordable list of good-looking, well-priced breakfast options. We noticed plenty of bread options (bagel, pide, multi-grain and sourdough among them) to satisfy our carb cravings, and an alluring assortment of cabinet sandwiches being bagged up for takeaway patrons.
The look was an eclectic array of colourful bric-a-brac, recycled wood, and stylishly sustainable pieces sourced from Trade Me. It felt delightful with the sun streaming in through the floor-to-ceiling windows on this winter's day.
The food was good - the bacon crispy, the sourdough soft and the portobello mushrooms delicious on my $17 "just right" brekky. However, most pleasing at Black and Gold was how well they catered for my friend with food allergies, suggesting options and making her feel so confident that she didn't cautiously make her way through the meal as she often does.
The coffee was very impressive, and we're not surprised - owners David Huang and Kayoko Nakamura are both ex-Espresso Workshop and David is a two-time Auckland Barista Champion. They serve single origin Supreme beans using syphons, V60 drippers and other fancy equipment. Our filtered cold brew ($4) was perfectly refreshing.
