HOLLYWOOD - British actor Jim Broadbent won the best supporting actor Oscar this afternoon for playing Iris Murdoch's husband, who must cope with his wife's Alzheimer's disease in Iris.
The role earned Broadbent his first Oscar.
He was one of three British actors nominated in the category joining Ben Kingsley for Sexy Beast and Ian McKellen for Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.
The Academy Awards are the US film industry's top honours and are given out each year by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences in a ceremony televised live around the globe.
