The New Zealand movie Whale Rider has been given a box-office boost in Britain to help it to compete against blockbusters such as The Hulk and Terminator 3.
Four arthouse films have landed National Lottery cash grants to help them to appear in more cinemas and attract a bigger audience.
The cash is part of a UK Film Council scheme to increase variety at cinemas around Britain.
Smaller companies struggle to cover the high cost of providing enough copies of the films, which often means they are able to have only a limited run despite receiving acclaim before release.
Four films have been chosen to receive cash from the lottery, totalling around £400,000 ($1.11 million), which will also help to cover extra promotion. The other films receiving cash are Respiro, Goodbye Lenin and Raising Victor Vargas.
