Something made Dave Chappelle the hottest comedian in America.
Seeing him wing it here as he throws a "who's-who of hip-hop" concert, and buses in folks - including a college marching band - from his small Ohio hometown to join the fun on the edgy streets of Brooklyn, it's not hard to see what that something is.
His natural exuberance infects proceedings throughout. And although Chapelle has a rap dream-team on his guest list - there are performances from Kanye West, Mos Def, the Roots, Common, Jill Scott and a reunited Fugees among others - Chapelle and his goofy generous spirit are the stars of this show without overstaying their screen welcome.
That's partly because director Gondry neatly intercuts from Chapelle to the preparation to the performances and the effect is dizzying and exciting, and funky as all get out. Especially when those wide-eyed Ohio band kids give Kanye West's hit Jesus Walks the brass section it has always needed.
