Eight-year-old Bindi Irwin became an Australian national hero yesterday afternoon when she fronted up to the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards in Sydney, just one month after the tragic death of her Crocodile Hunter father.
Accompanied by her mother Terri, the pair put on a brave face as they walked the orange carpet, reported People magazine.
"Bindi's been looking forward to this for a long time, so we're really glad to be here," 42-year-old Terri told reporters.
The Crocodile Hunter's family presented the final award of the night, Fave Aussie, which Irwin himself was originally lined up to present.
The award went to Australian Idol winner Guy Sebastian who commended Bindi on her bravery and composure.
Bindi gave slime-covered Sebastian a hug, fulfilling her ultimate goal of the evening - to be slimed.
* The Kids Choice Awards will screen on Nickelodeon NZ (Sky Channel 42) on Saturday October 28 at 12.30pm, repeated at 9pm.
