Well, at least she was responding to him. He gave her his towel.
"Here, rub your hair with that. I'll go up to the house and get you some dry clothes. What's your name? Agnes? Wait here."
Her eyes became big with alarm. "Don't go! Don't leave me! Freddy, I want you to take me home."
"I'm Brian. Get it? Bri-an. I'll take you home when you're dry."
"No, Freddy!" she held her arms out to him.
"I'll be back," he said.
As he went up the path, he thought he should have taken her back to the house to get changed. He didn't know why he hadn't, except that it was her parents' house and they were dead against drugs. He was, too, he'd discovered. It made him really angry the way people rubbished their brains with dope, especially when they were as beautiful as she was.
He got a dress from his mother's wardrobe, some underthings and a woollen cardigan which he stuffed into a supermarket bag.
Even now, there persisted a feeling that he knew the girl. It was as though they'd been brought up together when they were little kids, that kind of feeling. But her accent was strange and he'd never known anyone called Agnes. He was sure of that.
