Great news if you have less than perfect looks - it turns out that beauty really is in the eye of the beholder.
In fact, even identical twins disagree on who they think is good looking.
Beyond simple rules, such as symmetrical faces are usually more attractive, it seems each of us has a "type" to which we are attracted.
Laurea Germine, of Harvard University, and Jeremy Wilmer, of Wellesley College, who led the US study, said: "An individual's aesthetic preferences for faces agree about 50 per cent, and disagree about 50 per cent, with others."
Most research has focused on the universal features of attraction. In the latest study, 35,000 volunteers were tested online to find what each found beautiful. Some 547 pairs of identical twins and 214 pairs of same-sex, non-identical twins were also tested to see if their preferences could be down to genetic reasons.
