Beach Boys founder Brian Wilson has been named the 2005 MusiCares Person of the Year by the Recording Academy. Wilson, 62, will receive the honour at a tribute dinner, concert and auction on February 11 in Los Angeles.
The gala is part of a week-long festival leading up to the 47th Annual Grammy Awards, which will be presented by the academy on February 13.
The songwriter was selected for his accomplishments as a musician and for his philanthropic efforts benefiting research to cure cancer and other ailments.
Wilson, his two younger brothers, Dennis and Carl, cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine, formed the Beach Boys in 1961, recording hits such as I Get Around and California Girls.
MusiCares, established by the academy in 1989, helps musicians and others in times of need.
