Microsoft lead the way in flying games with its excellent Flight Simulator series. They added the combat title some four years ago with mixed success. Version 2 was a lot better, and the series has come of age with its third release.
Much of this is down to technology -- new and more powerful PCs allow better detail of plane and terrain and give a smoother flying experience.
But there are a few gameplay tweaks that make Combat Flight Simulator one of the best titles of its sort. The most exciting feature is the high level of detail when flying at low altitude. This gives a real rush when flying close to the ground at high speed on strafing runs or bombing missions.
Most classic planes used in the European theatre during World War II are recreated in exacting detail and flying capability, and there is a high level of reality in the flying and combat model.
This can make the game frustrating at times -- remember the average life expectancy of rookie pilots was measured in weeks.
