In Howick, with assistance from Monteith's, the brewery that is aligned with West Lynn's Malt, John Hellebrekers (Degree at the Viaduct) and Gavin Cowell have opened Basalt on the corner site that used to be the well-regarded restaurant, Citron.
Chef Peter Miller has spent time in Japan and the restaurant features wildfood, in its domesticated species of venison and ostrich, or fish of the day cooked any of four ways (stop me if you've heard that before). Much of the food is stonegrilled, or cooked at the table on hot rocks.
Owners: John Hellebrekers, Gavin Cowell
Restaurant manager: Dawn Smart
Executive chef: Peter Miller
Sous chef: Mark Vela
Open: Mon-Fri 7 days, weekend brunch from 9am
Food: Kiwi
