Retinol is a form of Vitamin A and it has almost superpowers when it comes to anti-ageing, but it can be tricky to use because of skin sensitivity issues. We asked Leanne Winsor of Dermalogica NZ about the dos and don'ts.
"Retinol stimulates cell renewal, increases collagen production and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles," she says. "It can 'normalise' skin cells, with results that can be seen immediately, and can get even better over time.
"Due to Retinol being a highly active ingredient, it can make the skin more sensitive, particularly to the sun, so it's imperative that SPF 30+ sunscreen is applied to skin every day.
"Retinol often requires skin tolerance to be built-up, so buffering the product and increasing the dosage is important. Be sure to follow the instructions of the individual product to be safe."
Top Tip: Most Retinol products are best used at night, so skin can absorb the active ingredient and the molecular properties can work to capacity.
