A new poetry prize has been launched to honour Auckland poet Sarah Broom who passed away in April at the age of 41, just before her collection Gleam was published.
The prize, founded by her husband Michael Gleissner and friends, aims to encourage a New Zealand poet to complete a full manuscript.
The prize will be awarded annually, with entries opening on February 3 next year (closing March 28). Guest judge Sam Hunt will award the prize in May.
Broom studied for a doctorate in modern poetry at Oxford University and left academia to raise her young family.
Her poetry has been published in New Zealand and international journals, including Landfall, Takahe and Bravado. A non-smoker, she died of stage four lung cancer, leaving three children under the age of 11.
