Australian television stars take home coveted Logies

MELBOURNE - Rove won his third, Bec won her first and John Wood broke a 16 year drought Australia's 47th TV Week Logie Awards.

It was three times lucky for television host Rove McManus at Australian television's night of nights.

The 31-year-old, who brought his actress wife Belinda Emmett to the event, yet again received the Gold Logie for Most Popular Personality on TV.

McManus beat Home and Away's Bec Cartwright and Blue Heeler's veteran John Wood for the top gong.

He also won the Silver Logie for Most Popular TV Presenter and his show Rove Live took home the award for Most Popular Light Entertainment Program.

"Thank you, that's all I can say," said McManus who received his gong from veteran actor Sam Neill.

"Does that mean I can swear now and it won't make it to air...

"This is f***** awesome.

"It's very humbling. I work in an industry which I love and cherish."

The expletive was broadcast.

He also paid tribute to those involved with Rove Live.

"I just want to say thank you to everybody who put our show together," said McManus, who also hosted the awards alongside Andrew O'Keefe and Eddie McGuire.

Cartwright, who made her first major public appearance with fiance tennis star Lleyton Hewitt, won the Silver Logie for Most Popular Actress for her role as Hayley.

"This is my first Logie, I've not got one before," said Cartwright, dressed in a Lisa Ho creation with an orange, pink and brown peacock feather design on the fabric. She also won the viewers' choice award for best dressed.

The star was so excited that she even mentioned her dogs in her acceptance speech - before her finance.

"I threw the dogs in there ... that was a bit silly," she told the media afterwards.

"I just wanted every single person to get a mention."

Nine time Golden Logie nominee Wood might have gone home without the top prize but he won the Most Popular Actor Logie, his first award since 1989.

Wood, who donned a classic pinstripe suit and purple shirt to the event, received a standing ovation when his name was called.

"I really was genuinely surprised for someone my age to win a popularity contest against some of those kids on Neighbours and Home and Away," Wood said.

"I really am chuffed for the show."

McLeod's Daughters picked up the award for Most Popular Australian Drama.

Meanwhile, Home and Away's Chris Hemsworth won the Silver Logie for Most Popular Male New Talent and Natalie Blair won the female category.

Most Popular Lifestyle Program went to Nine's DIY show Backyard Blitz while Australian Idol scored the prize for Most Popular Reality Program and the Footy Show; NRL was named Most Popular Sport Program.

In the industry-voted category Foxtel's Love My Way became the first pay TV show to pick up a Logie when it won the award for Most Outstanding Drama Series.

Most Outstanding Actress in a Drama went to Miranda Otto for her portrayal as Lindy Chamberlain in Through My Eyes.

Sam Neill won the Silver Logie for Most Outstanding Actor in a Drama for Jessica.

The telemovie also won the award for Most Outstanding Mini-series.

The cast of Neighbours, which turns 20 this year, performed a number at tonight's awards, which were held at Melbourne's Crown Casino. Neighbours was inducted into the Logies Hall of Fame.

Guests were also entertained by the cast of the new Grease stage production, US R&B singer Mario and Il Divo.

International guests who walked the white carpet, new to this year's event, and attended the awards ceremony included Cold Case star Kathryn Morris and CIS:Miami's Adam Rodriguez.
