Gentlemen, if you are planning on celebrating your 100th wedding anniversary with your beloved, you'd better start saving now.

It seems that the only acceptable gift on this rare occasion is a 10-carat diamond. This explains why the anniversary carries the accurate but rather uninspired name of the "10k Diamond Anniversary".

And for this small token of your enduring devotion, you can expect to fork out anything between $68,000 and $680,000.

Lists of names for wedding anniversaries run rapidly out of puff after 60. After this milestone, all further celebrations seem to involve an increasing size of diamond.

History does not record whether Lady Narima, wife of Sir Temulji Bhicaji Narima, received the recognition she deserved by sticking by his side for 86 years, the world's longest recorded marriage, from 1853 to 1940.

But hopes are high that Herbert, 103, and Zelmyra Fisher, 102, of North Carolina in the US are still hand-in-hand after 84 years. Married in 1924, they were, in February this year, the current record-holders.
