A study partly funded by a New Zealand body has found aspirin can help prevent dangerous blood clots.
The international research shows low-dose aspirin is a cheap and effective way to prevent potentially deadly blood clots in the veins of the leg or in the lungs.
Published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the study was part-funded by the Health Research Council of New Zealand.
Blood clots in the veins of the leg or the lungs are a common condition and affect about one in every 1000 people in New Zealand each year.
Director of the Thrombosis Unit at Auckland Hospital Dr Paul Ockelford led the New Zealand trials and says the results are an exciting development which will change the management of such patients.
