KEY POINTS:
Lorraine Cookson knows raceday fashion: she was the winner of the Prix de Fashion on Derby Day in 2007 and went on to win the overall fashion prize at Flemington for the Melbourne Cup. For those of you who aren't familiar with raceday fashion, that's a big deal - the Melbourne Cup is widely considered to be the benchmark. Years of experience and socialising at the races have given Cookson an appreciation of great raceday wear. "I love dressing up for the races and planning my outfit - like most women I like to wear something new. The type of day usually dictates what colour and style of garment I wear." The raceday regular, whose background is in graphic design, hopes to showcase her array of outfits one day. "I love all my raceday outfits. I enjoy the challenge of designing something different each time. I treat every design as a work of art."
What are your tips for raceday wear?
It is one of the few chances to actually dress up. Plan for the occasion, wear an outfit that flatters your best features and is suitable for the event and the weather. Choose gorgeous accessories, they are always noticed. Most importantly, wear your outfit with confidence and enjoy your day.
Who are your favourite designers and why?
I studied in Paris so I have a soft spot for French couture. My two top fashion houses would have to be Chanel and Dior. Closer to home, my favourite hat designers are Ailie Miller in New Zealand and Richard Nylon in Australia.
What was the last item of clothing you bought?
A pair of beige Guess shorts. They are so comfortable and versatile for summer.
What is your biggest indulgence or guilty pleasure?
This would have to be my love of dark chocolate, especially de Spa chocolates. True Belgian chocolate made in Christchurch. Soooo divine.
What is your favourite accessory?
My Dolce & Gabbana black leather belt with crystal buckle. It's an icon piece and looks fabulous on any outfit. I get so many comments.
Who does the best shoes and why?
My husband should answer this question as he brings most my shoes back from overseas. I love wearing heels and amazing shoes with plenty of detailing. Mi Piaci has a great selection.
What is the one thing that everyone should have in their wardrobe?
A collection of great accessories. This allows you to reinvent your look.
What is your favourite shop in Auckland?
I prefer to shop at designer outlet stores. It is amazing what pieces I can source. My friends are always envious of my purchases. I like to buy overseas samples. The nice thing is that these items are one-offs.
Your favourite shop elsewhere?
This would have to be Zara in London. The clothing is very up-to-the-minute and stylish.
How do you define the word "fashionable"?
Fashionable defines style. The way in which we juxtapose elements to complete a look. Being fashionable also reflects what is going on around us. We are somewhat dictated to by what we see in the shops. To me being innovative is fashionable. Wearing something that has a point of difference.
Whose wardrobe would you most like to raid?
I'm actually quite comfortable with mine at the moment.
Is there anything you would never wear?
A maxi dress, why on earth wear a tent and cover up?
What is the biggest fashion mistake someone can make at the races?
Trying to wear the latest fashion trends when they don't suit.
What is the one rule you always dress by?
Keep it simple. Define your style with classic lines. Less is more.
