KEY POINTS:
Jodine Bell suffers from an occasionally embarrassing syndrome. Called the Magpie syndrome, it involves her being attracted to anything that sparkles.
"When I was living in London I just had this thing for sparkly bags," Bell confesses. "And of course, I hardly ever used any of them. But then a girl can never have too many sparkly things," she laughs. Which is why Bell has turned her desire for glitter into something far more practical - when not working as a graphic designer, she makes and sells her own jewellery, under the label St Joe, at boutiques like Hailwood and Pearl.
"When I got back to New Zealand I did a beading course out in the suburbs and then a silversmithing course in Kingsland," Bell said. "And of course when I started making my own stuff, I didn't wear any of the [sparkly things] I already had."
Who are your favourite designers?
I really like clothes that are fun and not too serious. So I've always been a fan of Hailwood and Matthew Williamson, and I'm currently loving Lucy Hinckfuss. What was the last item of clothing you bought?
A leather jacket from Hailwood. Bright orange, super-soft leather.
What's your guilty pleasure?
Too much red wine. Your favourite accessory? The lucky, Lucky necklace from my "Guard Against The Evil Eye" collection. Best fashion bargain? Half price Marc Jacob boots - red, super high. I love them.
What endures throughout the seasons?
Scarves.
Your favourite shop?
Mid Century Design for great furniture and Victorian Gilt for everything else.
Your favourite shop elsewhere?
Steinberg & Tolkien (a vintage clothing store) in London. Your best beauty tip? Nivea lip balm in strawberry. Cherry is better, but you can't buy it here. Great for lips and even better for rosy cheeks.
What can't you live without?
Good friends, good books and my cat, Mr Charles.
If money were no option?
Antique jewellery galore!
Whose wardrobe would you most like to raid?
Wallis Simpson.
Best sartorial advice you ever had?
It's not the most eloquent statement but, "If you're going to do it - go hard". That has stood me in good stead from 80s glo-mesh to bright pink sequins.
You feel best wearing?
Jeans and a killer pair of heels.
Most cherished item?
My Mum's dresses from the 70s.
Favourite fashion movie?
Hilary and Jackie. Amazing gowns.
Personal style quirk?
Ridiculous colour combinations.
Most underrated item in fashion?
A smart pair of leather gloves.
When I was in high school I wore?
Terrifyingly short, tight skirts and matching hats that I used to whip up on my sewing machine.
