Art is all relative for Garry Currin and his children Lisa and John when their joint show The 3Cs opens at The Depot in Devonport at six tonight.
While Currin has a long and formidable reputation for his atmospheric landscapes, the Currins junior are just starting to make their mark, although they've been doing that, literally, since they were kids.
"When we moved into our house in Devonport in 1984, it was derelict," says John, "so as kids, we were allowed to draw on the walls - we always had that freedom."
John, now 29, trained at AUT. He works as an illustrator and comic-book artist, his graphic style in contrast to his dad's moody abstracts.
He started drawing "travellers' tales" cartoons when he was in India, and came under the influence of cartoon great Trace Hodgson when he lived for a time in Dunedin. His collection will include acrylic paintings, cartoons and a funky range of subversive Christmas cards.
Lisa, 24, who is showing 10 paintings plus some small, mixed media sculptural pieces, has taken classes at Hungry Creek Art and Craft School at Puhoi for the past four years. Where possible, she prefers to paint on recycled material, an ethos she shares with her brother and father.
Garry, who now bases himself at Badleys Beach near Leigh and Seacliff near Dunedin, believes The 3Cs is "a good meeting point for us all. We are interested in exploring who we are through our imagery and this show is about encouraging each other."
The 3Cs runs until the end of the month.
