LOS ANGELES - Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler will undergo throat surgery this week, forcing the veteran rock band to scrap the remaining 12 dates on its North American tour.
Tyler, who turns 58 on Sunday, will be unable to sing for two to three months following the operation. A spokeswoman declined to elaborate on his condition.
The band had already canceled eight shows since March 4.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees have been on the road since last October, when they released the live CD/DVD "Rockin' The Joint." According to a statement, the band now has no set plans for recording or touring.
Tyler co-founded Aerosmith in 1970, and the band quickly became known as America's answer to the Rolling Stones, thanks to such hits as "Walk This Way" and "Dream On." But heavy drug abuse crippled the band by the end of the decade. By the late 1980s, Aerosmith's newly sober members were rocking a new generation of fans who discovered them through MTV.
