Amid empty streets and machine gun-toting soldiers guarding Brussels in lockdown, a brave couple has defied terrorist threats by tying the knot in the Belgian capital.
Flanked by soldiers with their rifles at the ready, a photo of the newlyweds was captured by Dutch journalist Joris Marseille outside a Brussels church on Saturday as the city was in lockdown.
Marseille posted the image to Twitter, which has been retweeted over 1,000 times and covered by European media with one outlet stating the couple appeared to heed the words of US President Barack Obama, who said the most powerful tool to fight Isis was to say "that we're not afraid".
The Belgian army was deployed across the city on Friday night and on Saturday the streets of Brussels were reportedly abandoned as cafe and restaurant owners were told to close at 6pm.
The public was asked to avoid meeting in large groups and UK newspaper The Independent's Brussels correspondent, Leo Cendrowicz, told Newstalk ZB the Metro underground was "completely closed", as well as many of the top department stores, and events like football matches, concerts, and cinemas, had been cancelled.
