92-year-old flower girl captures hearts at granddaughter's wedding

The flower girl at a wedding is traditionally aged around three to eight years old, and it's a nice way to make a little person feel special.

But for their wedding, Abby Arlt and Dustin Mershon threw away the rulebook - and gave that honour to the bride's grandmother, aged 92.

Old but still sprightly, Georgiana Arlt happily fulfilled her duty during the outdoor ceremony at Mankato Golf Club in Minnesota on Saturday, the Daily Mail reported.

Holding on to her walker, the nonagenarian sprinkled flower petals down the aisle while a pianist played Ed Sheeran's Galway Girl and the congregation cheered and applauded.

Meanwhile, Abby, who was meant to be hidden from view before the ceremony, couldn't resist a peek from the window to see her grandma in the spotlight.

"I was really honoured. I'm happy I lived long enough to do it," Georgiana, who lives alone in Chaska, told Abc News.

"Then they had me out dancing and I slept all night when I got home in bed. I was worn out," she added.

Abby said she had always wanted her grandparents to be the flower girl and ring bearer on her big day.

However, her grandfather died last year - having already given his blessing to Dustin a week before passing away.

For Georgiana, her flower girl role was particularly touching - not only because it was at her granddaughter's wedding; it was also her first participation in a wedding apart from her own, 72 years earlier.

And who knows... with eight children, 17 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren, there could be plenty more nuptials to come for Georgiana.
