1. The Library Cafe

This beautiful heritage building has two main areas - a quiet lounge where you can read the many newspapers, magazines or coffee table books on offer while you eat - and the main dining room with both indoor and outdoor tables (the outdoor grassy area has a slide and play area for the kids). The food is great and there is a good range of gluten free and "allergy friendly" dishes available. No public holiday surcharge.

2. Shaky Isles Coffee Co.

We're big fans of the Shaky Isles menu - while it has some of the standard favourites there are always a number of exciting, new dishes that you won't find elsewhere, such as our winter favourite, brioche french toast with mascarpone and homemade preserved plums. The coffee is good too. And if you don't want to head into the city, they have a Kingsland eatery too. No public holiday surcharge.

3. Zomer

This is the sister cafe of the fine Zus & Zo in Herne Bay and it's just as good. Take a seat, place your order then admire the patisseries on display on the central bench. The coffee is terrific and the food, while small in size, is delicious. Zomer's a perfect place to stop after a trip to Takapuna beach. No public holiday surcharge.
