"It's going to be amazing for Dee to be able to experience this so early in her career, eight months in, and for me after almost 10 years in my trade."
As part of fundraising for the April 22 to 23 barbering event, a large gig will take place at Raumati Beach's Boundary Tap and Kitchen, courtesy of Kapiti's The Paepae Soundsystem.
The multi-zone DJ event will run from 8pm on Saturday, December 17, and showcase a collection of inside and outside DJs, as well as prizes, raffles and giveaways.
Included in the event are talented local DJs Jay-Rasik, Huntah, Fanta Pants, Finatik, ATM and 2K.
Hoping locals would get behind the event, Jess looked forward to bringing international concepts back to the coast.
"There's always something to learn."
According to Jess, who became fully qualified in 2009, rising trends at the moment included blade skin fades, while the comb-over and part line had been the style to stick around for the longest.
"The thing I love most about me job is the look on the customer's face when they see their awesome haircut, just how they asked for it.
"It's priceless, especially with the kids."
Part of barbering, she said, was being able to make people feel great, "whether it's with a bit of banter, deep and meaningful conversations, or just a listening ear".
She said Dee, who shifted from Taranaki to Kapiti with her sister four years ago, enjoyed being able to create something special with her hands for someone else.
While Jess enjoyed doing kids' designs and fades with sharp lines most, Dee's preference veered towards the smart and versatile slick back business cut.
"We're grateful and appreciative of all the help we've had so far from family, community and clients," Jess said.
"Also to other local businesses that have supported us with prizes for our raffles and hampers, bought raffle tickets, and put on this big gig for us.
"We are keen to learn anything new or different to the ordinary to bring back to Kapiti."
