SPREAD THE WORD: Fiona Greig's Sunday Cantina cafe will be opening soon.
Local chef Fiona Greig is set to open the doors of her new premises next month.
Sunday Cantina, in Mahara Place, Waikanae, will be a mix of fresh, locally-sourced, healthy food.
"Sunday Cantina is all about fresh, innovative New Zealand cuisine," Fiona said.
"Having been born and bred in Waikanae it's been my dream to open a cafe here.
"I also want to support other local businesses.
"I'll be using Dark Horse Coffee from Raumati, Duncan's Beer Brewing Co, KapiTea and fruit and vegetables sourced from Levin.
"Nearly all the main food items will be sourced locally including local free-range pork and bacon and fish from local family business Awatora Enterprise."
She said it was her goal to share her love of food with customers, teaching them the benefits of healthy food and what it can do for your physical and mental health.
"I want to show people you don't need a deep fryer or a huge amount of additives to create great tasting food.
"There are very few places on the coast doing raw and vegan food and that will be one of the attractions for customers, along with plenty of tasty options for meat lovers."
Fiona, a busy mum of two teenage daughters, is moving into the premises that was once home to cafe Bon Appetit, where Fiona worked as a teenager in the late 90s and developed her love of food.
"Some people have already asked about the name Sunday Cantina.
"It's inspired by my grandmother who made a traditional family roast every Sunday and my favourite Auckland restaurant Coco's Cantina.
"I hope Sunday Cantina brings some life and excitement to Waikanae town centre when we open the doors next month."
The cafe will be open in mid-June, with $3 bottomless coffees and free fruit for children.
