Despite earthquakes, flooding and a mini tornado, more than 40 people attended the launch of Relay For Life Kapiti 2017 on Wednesday evening last week in Paraparaumu.
"This indicates the community's energy and commitment for the relay," Relay For Life Kapiti co-ordinator Anne Brunt said.
"We now have 18 teamspre-registered with at least three more indicating they are likely to take part.
"If we have 25 teams that will be great, but 30 teams walking for 17 hours to raise awareness about cancer would be awesome."
This year's speakers at the launch were the three people who hold Kapiti Relay For Life together - Hayley Cooksley, Maria Durkin and Julie Maltby.
They spoke of about their experiences of being part of a relay team and about Relay For Life Kapiti 2014 and 2015.
"It was an opportunity for the audience to recognise the work that these three put into make sure the event is fun, as well as having some significant moments for cancer survivors and those remembering loved ones who have lost their lives to the disease.
"It was also a time for the relay organising team to acknowledge what a great team the coast can put together to organise a large community event."
Relay For Life Kapiti will be at Mazengarb Reserve, Paraparaumu, on February 18 and 19 next year.
"The teams all fundraise for the Cancer Society, and the relay is an opportunity to celebrate with those who have survived cancer, to remember those who have died from the disease and to promote healthy lifestyles."
Teams of 20 or more walkers, joggers or runners are being put together by local businesses, local colleges, community and service groups and families and their friends. To find out more or to enter or join a team, can contact Anne on 04 298 8514.
