Last dance for Kāpiti's much loved girlband

Kāpiti's much loved girlband, The Retro Divas are retiring after more than 10 years entertaining locals.

The Retro Divas have entertained at countless school galas, and fundraisers including Relay for Life, Mary Potter Hospice Strawberry Festival, Kapiti Festival, and cancer charity balls as well as events such as the Martinborough Food and Wine Festival and the Kapiti Food Fair.

After 13 years the sequined dresses are being hung up, the high-heeled boots are being left on the shelf and the wigs will be no longer.

"We've been going strong but our lives have gotten a little bit busy which is why we've decided to retire," said Retro Diva Charlotte Kerrigan.

"The highlights for us would be the variety of shows we have done.

"We do a lot of private parties and themed parties where people dress up which is a lot of fun.

"We've also done some big shows at Southward Car Museum and they've been pretty special but what's been really lovely is doing a lot of the charity shows.

"It's been part of our mission to do shows that are affordable for people, and wanting to do stuff for charity as well.

"Luckily we made enough money from the private parties to be able to do the charity events for free."

A running joke in the group is that their target audience is under 10s and over 70s because all the music is such high energy dance music.

Synchronised dance moves, singing with harmonies, bright dresses, glitter and truckloads of makeup could always be expected when the Divas were present with their goal to get everyone up and smiling by the end of their show.

To go out with a bang the group are holding a big celebration, a farewell dance party at Paekākāriki Hall on Saturday, April 6 at 8pm.

Guests are invited to dress up in their favourite retro gear from the 60s, 70s and 80s and boogie on down with the Divas.
