Running regular art workshops at the Kapiti Community Centre, the group consist of 16 students and eight volunteer helpers.
Helen started at Art Studio in March this year, after moving to the coast from Palmerston North, where she lived with her father until he passed away.
"Helen knew no one and has now made many friends, and is also flatting with one of the other art students, for the first time in her life," Art Studio coordinator Rebecca Bond said.
"I submitted an artwork from every member for the awards, and was delighted to find out that five artists had been selected for the top 100."
Helen's artwork Bottled Up took her a few months to create and represents "all the feelings she keeps bottled up".
Other Art Studio finalists who made the top 100 were Stacey Menzies, Michael Gervin, Debbie Holland and Colin Redman.
"Within an hour of the exhibition doors opening, Stacey and Michael's works were sold.
"I'm so proud of Helen.
She's keen to experiment and try new things.
"Our group isn't just about art, it's a safe place where the artists can express themselves and make close friendships.
"They support each other."
This year, the Art Studio received a Creative Communities grant from Kapiti Coast District Council, which helped with the purchasing of materials and supplies.
"We are very fortunate to have received this grant. Because of it, we are proud to be a part of the Kapiti Arts trail at Whitireia this year for the first time."
Helen said she was proud of her placement and enjoyed the fun she had at Art Studio.
