Semi retired engineer Neil Angus, from Te Horo Beach, has written his first novel called Off The Road.
"I first started writing poetry and short stories as a young marine engineer serving in the Merchant Navy.
"No computers back then, and the hand-written material has been long lost.
"I have had a lot of experiences and met many people from all walks of life during my sea travels and business activities.
"The urge to write has enabled me to cobble some of these adventures into storytelling."
The book focuses on six men, all from failed marriages, who meet by chance in an ocean side caravan park in Kapiti.
They instantly bond and learn there's still plenty of life left to live.
Jet, Gas, Bob, Erg, Tar, and Pie have had varied and successful careers, but have not been able to bring that same success to their marriages.
They have nothing in common other than they all took to the road when they were kicked out of the house or left to pursue a carefree existence in their retirement years.
Their pseudonyms are their adopted camp names that reflect their former occupations, and all nicknames are limited to three letters.
Jet was a commercial pilot, Gas a dentist, Bob a builder, Erg an electrician, Tar a seaman, and Pie an army chef.
They each have stories to tell and skills that makes their existence together a rewarding experience.
Interspersed with pranks and dollops of good old-fashioned philosophy, their story becomes a celebration of strangers uniting and enjoying themselves for the betterment of mankind.
Oh, and readers will also learn a sea shanty or two, among other life lessons.
