While NZME acknowledged that Kāpiti News was performing well, the company felt revenue growth was unlikely to continue year-on-year.
So the last Kāpiti News will be next week - Wednesday, December 18.
Starting in 1997, the Kāpiti News developed over time into a powerhouse community newspaper.
It has fostered a deep connection with the community as a trusted and valued source of information.
Our dedicated and caring staff, in both editorial and advertising, have gone the extra mile week after week, year after year, to create a high-quality product.
That dedication is highlighted not only in the many awards that adorn the office walls but from the many people who say how much they enjoy the newspaper.
I take great pride in what this newspaper has achieved over a long time and take heart that we bow out on a high with so much community support.
Retired journalist David Barber, writing in the Listener, said he had relied on the newspaper “to keep me informed on local politics, arts and events” and it had become “essential reading” each week.
There’s nothing better than crafting a story, especially an uplifting one, and knowing that you, the reader, will enjoy it.
Kāpiti Mayor Janet Holborow summed it up well in her weekly column when she said the newspaper was “a treasured and important resource for our district”.
“It has been a source of local news, fostered community connections, celebrated local successes and helped create a sense of place.
“People trust what they read in the newspaper and know the journalistic principals of fairness and accuracy have been used in its creation.”
Among the many emails I’ve received, this sentence from Joanne Ruscoe, stood out.
“I have always thought of the Kāpiti News as the best example of a community newspaper in New Zealand.”
Ka pai to that.
