KEY POINTS:
It is an early start for people attending Waitangi Day commemorations in the Far North.
A dawn service is being held on the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, where various leaders have gathered.
More than 46 thousand people are expected at Waitangi. Around 800 of them are from Tainui, supporting the Maori King on his first trip to the treaty grounds since being crowned.
Prime Minister John Key is also attending the dawn service, surrounded by tight security after he was jostled by protestors yesterday. Two men have been charged with assault, after rushing at Mr Key when he arrived at the lower marae yesterday.
However, the Prime Minister insists the attack will not compromise his freedom. He says the event was a one-off, and the ability of politicians to interact freely with the public is something which makes New Zealand special.
Mr Key says he is not at risk, and has complete confidence in his security team.
