Let the night winds blow upon the mountain of Kings and nestled between the great ones, let "Our Lady" rest overlooking the ones she loves. Be as one with the ancestors and allow us your love from a distance. And as the sun brings light to our humble world, watch over the ones who love you.

Our heartfelt condolances to Te Ata and her whanau at this time to all the Tainui people and the Turangawaewae whanau kia ora. I feel privileged to have lived amongst such an admirable strong woman. The teachings of our people lived through the mana in which was carried by our leaders and Te Ata has fulfilled her destiny. We have loved and lost and we give our Tautoko and aroha to her son the next King Tuheitia Paki and will follow him as we did our gracious humbling Lady.
- Arohanui Rangi,Ngarongo,Raani,Kelly Tatiana and Kiri Moana Melbourne (Tainui)
Tainui did Te Arikinui Te Atairangikaahu and her people proud. The organisational skills at her tangi over the past week were a logistical success. To also allow media coverage of such a sensitive event is to be applauded. The intelligent and articulate Mamae, who so generously gave her time to talk alongside broadcasters Derek, Julian and James shed light on many issues that I knew nothing about. I hope now that many people have a better grasp and understanding of Maori protocol. Iwi commitment, dedication, teamwork, loyalty and support all stood out. Perhaps the All Blacks could take a leaf out of Tainui's book.
- Maggie Trueman

We were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Te Ariki Dame Te Ata-i-Rangikaahu. Our Deepest Sympathy to her Family, the Tainui and Maori people everywhere on the death of a most beautiful and gracious Lady. For many years our two peoples have maintained links both here in Australia and across the waters in Aotearoa. We had the privilege of meeting the Queen and we have most fond memories of a dignified Lady whom we came to love and respect. In Aboriginal terms she has now gone to her Dreaming, the place of her Great Ancestors in a truly galyan wokka (beautiful land). Our thoughts are with you all at this time.

Maybe, just maybe when you put all the pictures together, with a little touch of your own (mana, kaha & aroha)you may see, that all this time in mourning, she was always looking down on all of us smiling. Free from pain and reunited with those who have also missed you for all these many years. We have all lost a mother. I have never had the honour of personally meeting Dame Te Ata, but in the twenty years that I have been living in New Zealand I have seen her from a distance, heard about the work she did. Tirelessly, unselfishly and with a mother's love. To me, she was not only the Maori Queen, but also Queen for this Dutch resident of New Zealand.
My thoughts and prayers are for you, your family and your people.

About 1958, my husband and our two sons had gone to Waitakaruru, to stay in a bach for a few days.
In those days there were only sandy roads and we went for a walk. There was really little else to do there.
The weather was lovely, and warm and the road was lined with beautiful trees and the walking was easy.
After a short time, a home made cart came along pulled by a horse, ambling its' merry way. There were some children in the back of the cart which had skids; I suppose that made for easy movement.
A lady was sitting in the front of the cart driving the horse. She was wearing a cotton dress and no shoes, a straw hat completed the ensemble.
We smiled at one another and she spoke to us but of course I didn't know the maori language as we had only been in New Zealand a short time.
Away we went home and as I was curious about this unusual cart, I asked some locals if they knew the lady. Of course they knew her, and the children said, Oh, that would be the Queen - she's been fishing, she goes each morning". They explained to me about the lady being the Queen of the Maori. I could hardly believe this story but still after all these years, I can remember that pretty regal lady and her home made cart. We never saw her again until I met her at some official function at the RSA in Huntly. She had a lady-in-waiting with her and of course, she was dressed beautifully. Her passing is a really historical event and she left such a legacy which will be a hard act to follow.

Dame Te Ata was a symbol of strength, unity and humilty, for all Kiwis. She carried out her duties with regal grace and yet her single outstanding trait must be her humility. Anyone could talk to her. And she would talk to anyone. Dame Te Ata was a unifying symbol for all Kiwis, Maori, Pakeha and Asian. She was a credit to her race...the Human Race. May you finally take your well deserved. God be with us all as you take your final journey home.

I met her in person playing housie, was that humble or what? Never ended there, she played her role very, very well, with a lot of grace, and blended in with the people, thats how she liked it, less fuss. You made a very confused, troubled man very humble, thank you. As one of our proverbs say, when a kauri has fallen in the forest of tane-mahuuta another will be born, yes our kuini we well have new songs to sing. Now a new chapter is about ti begin. Sleep now our queen, take your place by your maatua, tupuna. Haere haere haere atu ra. Pai marire.
