KEY POINTS:
Police are advising motorists to be careful in the Ngaruawahia region with celebrations starting in the Waikato town this week for the coronation of the Maori King, Tuheitia.
The celebrations start on Thursday at Turangawaewae marae, with the King giving his coronation speech next Tuesday.
Waikato District iwi liaison co-ordinator Sergeant Wayne Panapa will lead the police's support to the coronation, heading a team of 15 liaison officers and Maori wardens.
Mr Panapa said 50,000 to 60,000 visitors were expected to attend the various celebrations.
"We're expecting significant numbers of visitors from outside the Tainui area, including several dignitaries from the Pacific Islands and New Zealand.
"There will be about 60 kapa haka groups coming to participate as well. The main time Turangawaewae Marae will be open to receive visitors is between 8am and 5pm.
Police's main concern is traffic congestion and River Rd outside Turangawaewae will be closed with detours in place.
