The occupation of Christchurch's New Brighton pier by a group angry with the Government's foreshore and seabed legislation has ended.
Wind and rain forced the protest group to pack up yesterday.
A solid core had remained on the site from Friday until 5pm yesterday with Te Mangoroa spokesman Malcolm Mulholland declaring the occupation an overwhelming success.
He said about 400 people attended during the weekend, while many more came to listen and learn.
Most people had gone away with a better understanding of the issue, with many expressing support.
Group members had given out more than 1000 information leaflets.
Mr Mulholland said the group, which had formed only recently to oppose the Government's move to vest foreshore and seabed in Crown ownership, would now consider follow-up activity with other occupations planned around the country.
