KEY POINTS:
The governance of New Zealand's Maori Wardens has been a "mess" Minister of Maori Affairs, Parakura Horomia conceded in Parliament yesterday.
His comment comes in response to questions from Maori Party co-leader Dr Pita Sharples about Te Puni Kokiri's alleged bid to control Maori Wardens and the $17.2 million putea (fund) they were allocated in the 2008 budget.
Mr Horomia said an advisory group had been put together that includes representatives from Te Puni Kokiri, the NZMC and the New Zealand Maori Wardens Association to try and get some 'semblance' on the issue.
"The reason why we're at where we are at is because it was in a mess." he said. "What we have been trying to do is sort it out".
However Dr Sharples said today: "This takeover threatens to change community perceptions of the Maori Wardens. We would be very concerned if they came to be seen as unofficial police agents of the Crown".
He also questioned Te Puni Kokiri's ability to manage the putea, saying: "their own record of financial management leaves a lot to be desired".
