Outgoing Labour MP Mita Ririnui is backing Shane Jones as the party's next leader should it lose November's election.
Mr Ririnui, who is retiring after a 12-year career in Parliament, said Labour "absolutely" had to regenerate.
While Mr Ririnui did not offer names about who needed to go, he was prepared to offer opinion as to who the next leader should be.
"There has been a lot of coverage around three particular people: David Cunliffe,
David Parker, Shane Jones, and to be honest Shane Jones is my preference."
